The President and CEO of EssilorLuxottica among 25 entrepreneurs recognized by President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella.
Just like his predecessor and mentor Leonardo Del Vecchio—who received the title in 1986—Francesco Milleri has been awarded the prestigious Cavaliere del Lavoro (Order of Merit for Labor). This honor, bestowed each year on Republic Day, celebrates outstanding Italian entrepreneurship across the sectors of industry, agriculture, commerce, crafts, banking, and insurance. Milleri is one of 25 entrepreneurs selected on May 30 by President Sergio Mattarella, following the proposal of Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, in agreement with Francesco Lollobrigida, Minister of Agriculture.
Born in Arezzo in 1959, Francesco Milleri is now Chairman and CEO of EssilorLuxottica, the global eyewear giant formed in 2018 through the merger of the iconic Italian brand Luxottica—founded by Del Vecchio—and the French lens manufacturer Essilor. This strategic milestone, driven by both leaders, gave rise to a powerhouse comprising 150 brands, 600 production sites, 18,000 retail stores, and more than 200,000 employees worldwide. Each year, EssilorLuxottica produces 112 million frames and 710 million ophthalmic lenses.
Established in 1901, the Cavaliere del Lavoro honor is one of the highest distinctions awarded by the Italian state to individuals for entrepreneurial merit. Recipients must meet strict criteria, including an impeccable civic and ethical record, at least 20 years of independent and continuous professional activity, full compliance with tax and social security obligations, and abstention from any business practices detrimental to the national economy.
Milleri’s appointment is not only a tribute to his leadership in managing one of Italy’s most prominent industrial groups on a global scale, but also a symbol of continuity with the legacy of Del Vecchio, who passed away in 2022. A discreet figure with remarkable strategic vision, Milleri has led the company with determination, fostering a fully integrated model that combines design, innovation, and technology in an ever-evolving industry.
With this recognition, the Italian state honors not just a successful entrepreneurial journey, but also a deep commitment to the country’s economic development, driven by social responsibility and a global perspective.
