MINAMOTO second collection features frames inspired by Japanese craftsmanship and filmmaking.

Charmant has released the second MINAMOTO collection, where designs are informed by several facets of Japanese culture. The ancient Japanese art of lacquerware or ‘urushi’ inspired the red and black colour accents which appear on selected models. Secondly, the films of the famous Japanese filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa have played a part in the concept of the collection: like the first Minamoto collection which linked with Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, these new models are named after characters from other Kurosawa classics.
Envisioned, designed and made in Japan, each new Minamoto frame pays homage to Sabae’s traditions of craftsmanship with an affection for enduring, timeless treasures. With a nod to the Zen philosophy of minimalism, Minamoto frames are an expression of elegant simplicity. According to the company, each look is made of high-quality Japanese titanium and features intricate Japanese kanji engravings, such as the Minamoto logo, which appears on the frames. Completing the circle of creativity, the frames are presented in cases which are handcrafted from traditional Japanese washi paper, also produced according to traditions in the area of Fukui.
‘Minamoto’ means origin and references Sabae, located in the Fukui prefecture, which is the birthplace of the Japanese eyewear industry and where the Minamoto story originates. A long tradition of craftsmanship is kept alive in this region, from eyewear to lacquerware to the traditional production of the washi paper.
