UK: the number of people with sight problems could double in the next 20 years
The number of people with serious sight problems in Great Britain could double in the next 20 years. The warning comes from the Royal National Institute of the Blind (Rnib) in London.
Charitable associations are urging the British Government to spend more on prevention and treatment of sight problems. The Rnib states that these problems are already costing £5 billion a year, a figure that will increase together with the increase in eye disorders.
In the meantime, the Government has announced the intention to reintroduce free sight tests for the over 60s. The organizations which protect patients suffering from sight disorders highlight the need to invest, especially to support people affected by glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.
Rnib supports the appointment of a Health Officer specifically for sight problems and the need for the Government to promote a campaign that will help people to understand the importance of regular checks.
