Master’s degree in Switzerland for seven young ophthalmologists from Calabria

Seven talented young ophthalmologists from Calabria who want to make a huge leap in quality will be able to improve their knowledge by taking part in a top-level master’s degree supervised by the world’s leading experts in ophthalmology.

This has been made a concrete possibility by the agreement between the presidency of the Regional Council and the European School for Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology (ESASO), which was presented during a press conference last Friday morning at Palazzo Campanella (Reggio Calabria). Also present were the president of the Regional Assembly, the Hon. Giuseppe Bova, the executive director of ESASO in Calabria, Pippo Guarnaccia, the head of the ophthalmology division of the "Ospedali Riuniti" of Reggio Calabria, the president of the School, Borja Corcostegui, the director of the Institute of Ocular Microsurgery of Barcelona, the president of the Società Oftalmologica Meridionale and director of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Clinic of Bari, Carlo Sborgia, and, top of the list, Stanley Chang, director of the Department of Ophthalmology at Columbia University, New York City, a pioneer of surgical techniques for retinal detachment.

“The agreement” Bova underscored, “provides for the funding of 80% of the cost of the specialization course for seven ophthalmologists from Calabria who are under 40 years of age. While the major part of the cost will be paid by the Regional Council, obviously the students will be selected by ESASO. Based in Switzerland, the School will enable young professionals from our region to keep up to date with the continual scientific progress that is being made in the ophthalmology sector”.

The program has three stages: the first comprises four specialization modules to be completed within one two-year period at the Università della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano; the second is internship at research bodies, universities and hospitals; the third is the "master and back", which will benefit the public body or private institute which hosts the master’s degree students.
