Tom Davies launches the “eyewear tailor” in Italy
Coming soon to Italy is the bespoke eyewear by Tom Davies. Thanks to this designer, haute couture in London now applies to eyewear as well as clothes. The procedure is simple. Opticians in the Tom Davies circuit use special software to send to the company a photograph of the client wearing frames from the ready-to-wear line. The laboratory processes the data and 24 hours later the client can look at three eyewear proposals on the optician’s monitor and choose the one that will then be made to measure.
The eyewear is delivered in two weeks. The average cost of the frames is higher than those in the regular collection. “The Tom Davies brand” said Alistair Burroughs, brand project manager, “began in 2000 when Tom returned from a period in China and set up a laboratory where sunglasses were made for wealthy clients. It was a very exclusive line: frames could cost up to 5,000 pounds sterling and there was a 12-month waiting list”.
Today, Tom Davies has industrialized the entire production process for three lines: Ready to Wear, Tailored (modifications limited to color) and Bespoke. “In 2008”, Burroughs concluded, “our billings were 5 million pounds sterling for the British and German markets. Now we feel we are ready to expand to other countries, so we took part in Mido in Milan to approach Italy and France and we were in New York City end March for the presentation to the US market”.
