6th Used Eyeglasses National Collection Day

6th Used Eyeglasses National Collection Day

Last Sunday was the Sixth Used Eyeglasses National Collection Day and it was hugely successful with the Italian public in major cities. This very interesting event was organized by the Lions Clubs, which have been committed to collecting used eyeglasses for no less than 80 years. The following are the details of this truly noble gesture in the interests of solidarity.

“You don’t need them anymore, but they could help someone see again” was the slogan of the sixth edition of the event. This aimed at raising the awareness of all Italian citizens about a problem that was broached and exposed by the World Health Organization, according to which the sight of 153 million people could easily be improved by a pair of used and recycled eyeglasses.

The aim of the initiative is to help the mothers, children, men and workers in general in developing countries to have the right to cure vision defects with the prescription eyeglasses that we may have bought a long time ago and completely forgotten about.

Worldwide, there are 13 Lions Club Centers that collect and catalog all the eyeglasses gifted by people from all over the world. These centers were set up with the sole objective of making everyday life easier and safer for the people in countries where “an eye test costs a month’s wages and frequently there is only one doctor for a community of hundreds of thousands of people. In many areas, bad or neglected eye function can impose unemployment on adults and exclude children from school.”

So why not contribute to such an important initiative. There are no fewer than 1000 permanent used eyeglasses collection sites in various parts of Italy. Just visit www.raccoltaocchiali.org to find your nearest collection point.
