University of Milano-Bicocca: CME course on tear film

University of Milano-Bicocca: CME course on tear film

An important appointment with Continuing Medical Education at the faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences at University of Milano-Bicocca. A CME course titled “The Study of Tear Film: from vision wellbeing to informed contactology”. The course, which is supported by Federottica and the Roll of Optometrists, is in two sessions: the first is on June 6 and 7, 2010, the second on June 27 and 28, 2010.

Contactology and, in particular, the study of the characteristics of tear film, are subjects of ever-increasing interest to sector operators.
Knowledge about the normal, pathological and evolutionary variations of tear film is gradually improving and this is of considerable importance for understanding certain aspects with specific reference to contactology. The aim of the course is to provide:

1) essential information about the interaction between contact lenses and the eyes and, in particular, about the characteristics and possible physiological, physical and chemical variations in tear film;
2) information about the chemical-physical properties of the latest generation polymers used in contactology;
3) essential information for investigating problems deriving from the incorrect use of contact lenses;
4) information about the chemical and physical characteristics and physiological interactions of tear substitutes, in particular the lack of tear production, which is now one of the main reasons for abandoning the use of contacts lenses;
5) theoretical and practical elements for carrying out the examination and study of tear film;
6) theoretical and practical elements for assessing eye comfort and making an informed choice of the best contact lenses for specific cases.

The subjects cover aspects that optometrists come up against in daily practice and could be an opportunity for professional updating, which also aims at providing a wider concept of vision wellbeing.

16 CME credits have been assigned
The lecturers are Dr. Luca Benzoni, contract professor for the Optics and Optometry Degree Course; Dr. Fabiana Causio, a graduate in Optics and Optometry; Dr. Rossella Fonte, contract professor for the Optics and Optometry Degree Course; Dr. Marzia Lecchi, researcher in physiology at the Department of Biotechnology and Biosciences; Prof. Antonio Papagni, associate professor of organic chemistry at the Department of Materials Science; Dr. Silvia Tavazzi, researcher in experimental physics at the Department of Materials Science.
