Certottica protects consumers and quality products

Information-training and control testing are the focus of the agreement to be signed soon by Certottica and Unioncamere del Veneto, following input by the Veneto Region, which allocated ad hoc funding. The agreement will be presented during the press conference to be held on Friday, September 2 in Venice.

Veneto Region’s administration has declared war on fraud, counterfeiting, and adulteration. The Region’s Council reiterated its stand, following the initiative of Councillor Franco Manzato, responsible for the safeguarding of consumer rights, by approving an agreement for provisions to counteract counterfeiting and fraud with Unioncamere del Veneto, the implementing party, in collaboration with the Region itself. Unioncamere has been entrusted to carry out a variety of actions and manage the relative budget.

“This initiative,” pointed out Manzato, “is part of a general intervention programme entitled ‘Provisions to contrast fraud, counterfeiting, and adulteration and Territorial System of help desks for consumers and users’, financed by the Ministry for Economic Development with proceeds from administrative sanctions imposed by the Antitrust Authority.” This is the basis for the agreement between Unioncamere and Certottica, which will be responsible for conducting laboratory tests to verify product compliance. These initiatives are linked to current facts for the purpose of confirming the support of institutions towards the world of business and the consumer.

It would be worthwhile to remember the episode that made headlines during the final days of June and set off alarms for a problem that is becoming increasingly evident. The Italian Tax Police confiscated at least 560 thousand pairs of counterfeit eyeglasses manufactured in China - documents a press release drafted by the Veneto Region on June 29 - in which the materials could even have caused serious health problems for those who used them. “It is outrageous,” had declared Luca Zaia, President of the Veneto Region, “that these crooks, in addition to stealing, have no scruples about endangering the health of others. In this case, no UV filter, image distortion, and the release of nickel in case of sweating.”

With a view to protecting markets, companies operating legally, and consumers, the Region has appropriated the abovementioned funds in order to draft the agreement to be signed by Certottica and Unioncamere del Veneto: the Institute based in Longarone will also have the responsibility to carry out what it is best known for, which is testing to evaluate the product compliance with current laws. And that's not all. Another objective focuses on training to spread a culture of legality and product safety to safeguard eyesight. Certottica will play an essentially technical role: the Institute will have to conduct technical tests called for by regulations on some types of sunglasses, sampled from the market for the purpose of evaluating the essential requirements established by the applicable regulations.

The agreement will be based on a programme that touches upon several fronts to safeguard the consumer as well as companies operating legally, which also suffer damages from counterfeiting, poor quality products, and violation of the law.
