Female head of World Council of Optometry
The World Council of Optometry (WCO) welcomed its new president Tone Garaas-Maurdalen during the general meeting of delegates in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The new president is the first woman to cover this role.
A new head for the World Council of Optometry (WCO). For the first time, a woman has been elected president: Tone Garaas-Maurdalen, a qualified optometrist since 1976, with important professional experience in Ciba Vision and at the School of Optometry in Norway. She is currently executive director of the Norwegian Association of Optometry.
“It is a real honor” Tone Garaas-Maurdalen commented “to be the first female WCO president and I look forward to continuing the important work Professor Woo and WCO have done for the profession worldwide. On behalf of WCO, I would like to thank George Woo for leading the organization over the past two years.
“It is a critical time for WCO” the new president added “as we agree a new strategic direction. WCO has always been an important unifying voice and catalyst for international projects and services. I am pleased to be able to ensure that it will continue to meet the future needs of the optometric profession and the public around the world”.
