Available Next September in Canada, Crizal Prevencia Lenses

After launching their product in Europe, Essilor follows up in North America Essilor will launch Crizal Prevencia in the Canadian market. They are the only no-glare lenses offering the most complete eye health protection against harmful light in a clear lens, to prevent ocular disease and favour long-term eye health.   Light is essential to our vision and well-being. However, UV rays are a major risk factor for cataracts (20 million procedures every year throughout the world) and cumulative exposure to blue-violet light contributes to the onset of AMD for which there is no cure today.   Essilor and the Paris Vision Institute have discovered the precise band of light of 40 nm that is the most harmful for the retinal cells: blue-violet light (415 - 455 nm). However, blue-turquoise light (465 - 495 nm), which is part of the visible spectrum, is essential to the pupillary constriction reflex and human biological clock synchronization.   Essilor's extensive R&D experience in the field of selective light filtration leads to the development of the innovative Light Scan™ technology. It filters out harmful blue-violet and UV light, allows essential visible light, including blue-turquoise, to pass through and ensures excellent transparency and the best enduring clarity of vision by eliminating glare, scratches, smudges, dust and water.   Outdoors, sunlight emits blue-violet light all year long, whatever the weather. Indoors, blue-violet light is also present (sunlight through windows, LED lighting, computers, tablets, smart phones, compact fluorescent light bulbs). Protection against blue-violet light is needed all day long, all year long.   The results from Essilor and the Paris Vision Institute's research show that with Crizal Prevencia blocking 20 per cent of the blue-violet light, the rate of retinal cell death declined by 25 per cent, a protection level which could alleviate the cumulative risk of AMD. Crizal Prevencia clear lenses provide 25 times more protection against UV rays, compared to the naked eye (E-SPF 25 for all materials except Orma E-SPF10). E-SPF is an index developed by Essilor, certifying the global UV protection of a lens, front and back.   Denis Cohen Tannoudji, director of Disruptive Concepts at Essilor, was at EOUM (Entretiens Ophtalmiques de l'Université de Montréal) on May 16 and 17 to explain and answer questions from the 309 participants, including 175 ophthalmologists, 69 residents and 65 paramedics.
